Food labeling is where most Indian food export shipments fail at the border. Not because the product is bad — but because the label is wrong. Getting labeling right for each export market is a regulatory requirement, not a design preference.
Why Food Labeling Compliance Matters for Exporters
Each country has its own mandatory labeling requirements. A label that is perfectly legal in India may be illegal in the UAE, UK, or USA. The consequences of non-compliance range from shipment detention to product destruction — all at the exporter's cost.
More importantly, a compliant label signals to buyers and distributors that you are a serious, professional exporter. It reduces their compliance risk and makes them more likely to take on your product.
Universal Label Elements Required in Most Markets
- Product name — Common or usual name of the food
- Net quantity — Weight or volume in the local measurement system
- Ingredients list — In descending order of weight, in the local language
- Allergen declarations — Bold or highlighted allergens as per market standards
- Nutrition information — Format varies significantly by market
- Country of origin — "Made in India" or equivalent
- Best before / expiry date — Format and placement requirements vary
- Manufacturer name and address — Indian manufacturer details
- Importer name and address — The local importer in the destination country
- Storage conditions — Especially for chilled or ambient-sensitive products
Market-by-Market Labeling Requirements
USA — FDA Label Requirements
The FDA requires a Nutrition Facts panel in a specific format (updated 2020 format). Serving sizes must conform to FDA Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs). All 9 major allergens must be declared. Labels must be in English only. Net weight in both metric and imperial (dual declaration).
UAE — ESMA Label Requirements
Labels in the UAE must be in Arabic and English (bilingual mandatory). Halal certification logo must appear on the label. Manufacturing date AND expiry date both required (not just best before). Nutrition information in kJ and kcal. Additives listed by their E-number and function.
UK — Post-Brexit Label Requirements
Following Brexit, the UK now requires a UK address for the responsible food business operator. The "Traffic Light" nutritional labeling system is recommended (though not yet mandatory). 14 major allergens must be emphasised. Net quantity in metric (imperial optional). Best before or use by date in day/month/year format.
EU — EU Food Information Regulation (FIR 1169/2011)
The EU Food Information Regulation is comprehensive. Mandatory elements include: food name, ingredients, allergens (14 categories, emphasised), net quantity, date of minimum durability, storage conditions, name of food business operator, country of origin, instructions for use, alcohol content (if applicable), and nutrition declaration. Language must be in the official language of the member state.
Australia and New Zealand — FSANZ Standards
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) requirements include: warning statements for certain ingredients, specific date marking requirements, and ingredient labeling in Australian/New Zealand English. Genetically modified ingredients must be declared.
Design your label with sufficient space for a language sticker overlay. Many exporters use a base English label and apply country-specific stickers (in Arabic, French, German etc.) for each market. This reduces label printing costs while maintaining compliance.
Halal and Kosher Certification on Labels
For UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and Indonesia, halal certification from an approved body is mandatory for most food categories. The halal logo must appear prominently on the label. Not all halal certifiers are accepted in all markets — ESMA maintains an approved list for UAE, JAKIM for Malaysia, and MUI for Indonesia.
Kosher certification opens doors to Jewish communities in the USA, UK, and Israel, and is increasingly used as a quality signal in premium food markets globally.
